Leashes

Any Retractable Leash

There are a handful of retractable leashes out there, and a handful of injuries from them.

Padded Handles

Padded handles aren’t too shabby, but they can make it troublesome to hold a leash properly in the standard “Finger lock” position.

Chain Leash

Chain leashes for "puppy teething/leash chewing". I don’t use these to address inappropriate chewing on the leash. I did find an excellent side use for them....

Dangling Poop Bag Dispensers

They aren't bad, but they block the ability to do smooth leash handling.

Hands Free

There are a few specific uses for hands free that are wonderful, I would just choose a different leash for everyday use.

Long Lines

I personally strongly discourage anything longer than 20ft.

Waterproof Leashes

We use water regularly with our dogs, and boy do the common types of leashes start to stink easily.

Night Leashes

LIGHT UP LEASHES ARE AWESOME! It helps cars/bikes not kill you, which is a good thing, and helps people with reactive dogs avoid you so nobody has a meltdown.

6ft Nylon Flat Leash

My favorite pick is a simple, ¾ inch wide, 6ft nylon flat leash without any fancy doohickies or extra handles.

Tuggin Leashes

Working reactivity, aggression, squirrel chasin, or any type of distractions? Are you working with a dog doing any kind of stuff or thing? Tuggin leashes are pick #2 for this gal!

Walking your dog anywhere seems like quite the art to master with all the distractions, triggers, pulling, and a bergillion products to navigate. If you set a goal to learn one new thing each day, it all comes together sooner than you know it, so just enjoy the journey!

Lets start with a few leashes I wouldn't buy.

There are SO many more in the world to sift through. This is just meant to give you some footing. I wrote in my reasons and experiences so you had the tools to make your own decisions on what works best for you and your dog. All leashes can break, and no leash offers every option you could want, but collecting different flavors of leashes is half the fun. Now you know why generally speaking, I personally use a basic 6ft flat leash, and occasionally a 20ft flat leash more often than any others. I hope this helps get you started, and makes things just a little less confusing. I also hope you share some pictures of when you deck out your dog in disco lights at night! I love good disco dog pictures.
